Introduction to Systematic Reviews: Methods, Standards, and Best Practices
Systematic reviews are a cornerstone of evidence-based medicine, designed to synthesize research findings using transparent, reproducible, and rigorous methods. This session introduces the foundational principles of systematic reviews, with an emphasis on what it takes to produce a high-quality, publication-ready evidence synthesis project. Participants will explore the major steps of the systematic review process, from a focused research question to reporting results according to current standards such as PRISMA 2020 and PRISMA-S.
A brief portion of the session will introduce the responsible use of AI and automation tools in systematic review workflows. These tools may assist with tasks such as brainstorming search concepts, translating searches across databases, prioritizing records for screening, or organizing workflows, but they do not replace methodological expertise, librarian involvement, human judgment, documentation, or transparent reporting.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose, defining characteristics, and appropriate uses of systematic reviews in evidence-based medicine and biomedical research.
- Distinguish systematic reviews from other review types, including scoping, narrative, rapid, and umbrella reviews.
- Describe the major steps of a publication-grade systematic review workflow, including protocol development, screening, data extraction, risk-of-bias assessment, synthesis, and PRISMA-based reporting.
- Recognize appropriate, limited, and transparent uses of AI-assisted tools in systematic review workflows while maintaining human oversight and methodological rigor.
Please note: This class will be held via Zoom and recorded. You will receive the Zoom link after registering and again an hour before the session.
