Copyright and Licensure 101

This session introduces medical and scientific researchers to basic copyright issues, Creative Commons (CC) licensing, and fair use principles in an effort to learn how these issues apply to publishing in journals and data repositories. Participants will review the six CC licenses, from the most open (CC BY) to the most restrictive (CC BY-NC-ND). The course also covers the four factors of fair use (purpose, nature, amount, and effect), helping researchers gain a basic understanding of when and how copyrighted materials can be used legally. This introductory class helps support informed decision-making in open science publishing, journal submissions, and data sharing.

Learning Objective - By the end of this session, learners will be able to:

1. Identify and describe the six Creative Commons licenses.
2. Select the appropriate CC license for research publications and data repositories.
3. Apply proper attribution for works shared under CC licenses.
4. Evaluate fair use factors to determine whether copyrighted materials can be used.
5. Navigate journal and repository policies to ensure compliance with copyright and open science requirements.

Please note: This class will be held via Zoom and recorded. You will receive the Zoom link after registering and again an hour before the session.
