Open Science in Action: Policies, Publishing, and Practices for Healthcare Research

This course equips healthcare researchers and professionals with the skills to navigate the evolving landscape of open science. Topics include NIH open science policies, grants supporting open-access publishing, strategies for identifying and selecting open-access journals, and managing and sharing data for compliance and impact. Through interactive discussions and hands-on exercises, participants will gain practical tools to publish their work and maximize its accessibility and impact in alignment with open science principles.

Learning Objective - By the end of this session, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the key components of NIH (including their policy change to go completely open source) and other grant-giving institutions' mandate to publish in open science and understand those policies and their implications for researchers.
  2. Identify credible open-access journals and avoid predatory publishing.
  3. Describe the process for applying for NIH grants supporting open science and data sharing.
  4. Utilize tools and repositories to share research data in compliance with funder mandates.
  5. Integrate open science practices to enhance the impact and accessibility of healthcare research.
  6. Understand how to NOT “be scooped” in the world of Open Source.

Please note: This class will be held via Zoom and recorded. You will receive the Zoom link after registering and again an hour before the session.
